BCCI reintroduces Yo-Yo test for selection criteria in the Indian cricket team

The Cricket Council of India (BCCI) on Sunday finally held the meeting which was pending since India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup. After the meeting, the board decided to reintroduce the yo-yo fitness test in the eligibility criteria for selection in the Indian cricket team.

The meeting was attended by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny, captain Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, NCA chief VVS Laxman and selector Chetan Sharma.

The yo-yo test is an endurance fitness test that involves running between markers spaced 20 meters apart at increasing speed. The test was introduced when Virat Kohli had the reins of the Indian cricket team, initially with a qualifying score of 16.1 and later raised to 16.5.

Apart from yo-yo test, DEXA (bone scan test) is also now a part of the selection criteria.

The meeting also took some important decisions regarding the future composition of the Indian cricket team and decided that budding players who are preferring white-ball cricket for the riches of IPL over red-ball cricket, should would need to play a “substantial home season”. eligible for national selection

“Emerging players will have to play enough domestic seasons to be eligible for selection in the national team. Yo-yo test and Dexa will now be part of the selection criteria and will be implemented in the customized roadmap for the central pool of players.” Keeping in mind the preparations for the Men’s FTP and ICC CWC 2023, the NCA, along with the IPL franchises, will be eyeing the target Indian players to participate in IPL 2023.

The entire selection panel of the Indian cricket team was sacked after the defeat in the World Cup. But, Chetan Sharma (member of the sacked panel) attended the meeting. He has reapplied for the job along with Harvinder Singh, another member of the sacked panel.

The roadmap for the 2023 World Cup was also discussed in the meeting. “The roadmap for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as well as issues of player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were discussed in detail during the meeting,” the statement said.

The fitness level of the Indian players came to the fore after the inconsistent performance of the players. Important players like Jasprit Bumrah are sitting out of the team for some time now.
