New Delhi: The Indian Polo Association and PS Ventures have announced the first edition of the Indian Arena Polo League (IAPL). The four-week long league will be played in Delhi and Jaipur in April and players from 20 countries will participate in the auction process.

Indian players like Simran Shergill, Dhruvpal Godara, Shamshir Ali, Col Vishal Chauhan and current Indian captain HH Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur will participate.

The league will be played in Arena Polo format which is a faster and more exciting format of the game. The team owners will own six franchises in this league and all the matches will be telecast live on TV and OTT platforms.

The first polo club in India was established in Silchar, Assam in 1834 and India introduced the game to the world. The oldest and still in existence is the Calcutta Polo Club, established in 1862, by two British soldiers, Sherer and Captain Robert Stewart.

Colonel Rohit Dagar, secretary of the Indian Polo Association, said, “IPA fully supports the intention to form the Indian Arena Polo League. This will give the sport a younger and global audience.”

Col. Tarun Sirohi, former captain of the Indian polo team and co-founder and CEO of the Indian Arena Polo League, said, “We are going to build a lifestyle experience centered around the game of polo, fashion, glamour, and luxury. A world class product that India has never seen before.”

Arena polo is similar to the T20 version of cricket, with smaller grounds, bigger balls, colorful clothes, cheerleaders, etc. This league will be the first of its kind in the world. The first edition is going to start from 13 Apr 13 and the final will be played on 7 May.

Arena polo is fast gaining popularity all over the world including India, USA, UK, Dubai, Spain and Australia. The Federation of International Polo is an active supporter of the league and will include the league in its international marquee event calendar. The league will be a perfect amalgamation of sports, fashion and lifestyle.
