India won the toss and decided to field for the fourth consecutive match against Australia in the fifth T20 match played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said at the toss that Jemimah Rodrigues has been rested to bring in an extra spinner in the form of Rajeshwari Gaikwad, “hopefully to restrict the runs.” Gaikwad played in the third T20I, but was then dropped in the fourth game as an extra batsman in the form of Harleen Deol.
Australia went into the match having already clinched the series after a seven-run win in the fourth match at the Brabourne Stadium, leading 3–1.
