50 overs South Africa 298 for 7 (van der Dussen 111, Miller 53, Curran 3-35) vs England

Rassie van der Dussen scored 111 off 117 balls as South Africa bundled out England for 299 in the first ODI against England at Bloemfontein.
After the hosts batted first after captain Temba Bavuma won the toss, van der Dussen’s fourth century in the format and second against Jos Buttler’s charges was the bedrock of South Africa’s innings. Alas, it was an innings of 298 for 7 that bubbled along nicely without ever threatening to boil over and made England that much more difficult. This substantial knock, along with David Miller’s 53 at the back end – the pair putting on 110 in a fifth-wicket partnership – gave them something to defend on a pitch that looked comfortable to bat on beyond the odd turn .
Quinton de Kock and Bavuma set about a solid opening platform of 61 in the powerplay, only for the skipper (38) to hack Moeen Ali to a diving Sam Curran at mid-on. A breakthrough was needed in the ninth over, as both David Willey and Jofra Archer were scoring easily, returning to England 678 days after their last international match.

An opening spell of five overs, 0 for 41, was as encouraging for his own return from a myriad of stress fractures as it was for his chances of scoring easily against South Africa’s pace. But once the fielding restrictions were over, the run-rate was restricted by the demise of de Kock while trying to pull Curran down the leg side. When Ollie Stone struck with his first ball of the innings – Aiden Markram caught well by Dawid Malan at cover – the score was only 116 for 1 at the start of the 21st over and 1 for 1 after the first 10 overs. Had scored 75 runs.

Heinrich Klaasen’s 32-ball 30 inspired the extra, with at least two sixes – his only boundaries – to add 55 runs for the fourth wicket with van der Dussen. The former was accounted for by Adil Rashid LBW but the latter was able to use that stand to spring into high gear.

After reaching his fifty off 63 deliveries, 47 more were required to move towards three figures. And once he was in the pocket, the remaining 5.4 overs could have been used to swing for the fences, especially with Miller set at the other end.

The pair would put on 100 runs off 95 balls, thanks to a massive six off van der Dussen in Archer’s costly 47th over, which scored 20 runs. Curran then displayed death-bowling skills which elevated him. For Player of the Tournament in England’s recent T20 World Cup success to remove Centurion: A right-arm cutter pulled a thick edge, which was well caught by Ben Duckett charging from deep cover.

A score in excess of 300 still looked on the cards, even with a comeback wicket for Archer (1 for 81), the dismissal of Wayne Parnell, giving his figures an easy gloss . Miller’s boundary off the first ball of the final over took him to his ninth fifty-plus ODI score. But some extraordinary work on the long-on fence from Willey – moving past the boundary in the middle to calmly relay a catch to himself – ended the knock two balls after bringing up the milestone. With this, Curran accepted three of the remaining three deliveries and ensured that only 18 came in the last three overs.
