After Ishan Kishan, 23-year-old Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian player to score a double century in a One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand on Wednesday. On the basis of such beautiful innings, India successfully defeated the Kiwis in the first ODI.

After the match, Gill confessed that initially he was not thinking of scoring a double century and realized the reality of it too late.

Sometimes when bowlers When you’re on top, you need to be.” Put the pressure back on him,” Gill said during the post-match presentation. The idea was to avoid dot balls, show some intent and hit hard in the gaps. That’s what I focused on doing.

He said, ‘Not really thinking about a double hundred, but once I hit a six in the 47th over, I knew I could get there. Earlier, I was playing ball on merit. He (Kishan) is one of my best teammates. I was there when he scored his ODI double hundred and it was special. It feels good when you want to do something special and everything you try works out. It (double ton) has sunk in very well. However, the game turned out to be much closer than we had anticipated,” Gill said.

The youngster has broken several records including becoming the fastest Indian to score 1,000 runs in ODI cricket. Gill has broken the records of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan who took 24 innings to complete 1,000 runs, a feat Gill achieved in just 19 ODI innings. Globally, currently, Pakistani player Fakhar Zaman holds the record for the fastest to score 1,000 runs in just 18 innings.

Gill also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the highest individual score in ODIs against New Zealand. Tendulkar’s unbeaten 186 against the Kiwis at Hyderabad was one of his best innings.
